BRASSISSIMA · SECTION 3

Brass instruments: simulation and theory

From the mouthpiece to the bell: this section connects the properties of individual components with the behaviour of complete instruments. The focus is on local perturbations, the eight valve paths and the position of the valve cluster.

From experiments to a new stage of the project: years of experimental work are being reviewed and presented anew from 2026. Videos illustrate processes in space and time; PDFs provide room for derivations, measurement details and extended analyses.

Small local changes to the bore

Left: local expansion · Right: local constriction

Local expansionLocal constrictionxx
A local expansion or constriction changes the cross section at a chosen position. Its acoustic effect depends on the geometry and position. Schematic, not to scale.

  • From cylinder to trumpet – local perturbations

Research report on individual and combined local changes in cross section in a complete B-flat trumpet in V0: peak frequency, impedance magnitude and pressure-node spacing, together with the transfer procedure that was tested. Please watch the foundations in Videos 1–3 first.
